The Ruth Jageman Panorama Juried Art Exhibition 2012

1. Ruth Jageman Memorial Award--Best of Show--$600

Jesse Wolfgang, They Had No Idea I Was Watching, Graphite

There’s so much here, from the precise and stylized realism to the abstract reflections that swirl creating a sense of movement while emphasizing the space around the figures, while the warmth of the moment depicted creates a strong emotional charge.

2. John Silk Deckard Memorial Award--Second Place--$500

Derrick McAdoo, Planet Metro, Acrylic/Watercolor and Ink

The symmetry in this work feels to me like it relates to the patterning often found in Native American art as well as in nature, with a geological, subterranean mood. The use of localized color keeps things from getting flat or overly repetitious, and I particularly like the counter play of roughly painted marks and the symmetrical order.

3. Pauline Scott Memorial Award--Third Place---$400

Dennis Cerami, Blue Measure, Mixed Media

This piece has a wonderful “between quality. The distressed wood, rich with age and use, has been configured into a construction of geometric order, while the rulers measure but for no discernible purpose. At once irrational and carefully composed, it is a study in tension and balance.

4. Bob Gasper Memorial Award--Best of Painting--$350

Lee Forrest, Money Tree, Acrylic

I feel that this painting is noteworthy for the manner in which the artist has combined different forms of representation—pictures of animals, corporations, flags, and letters—into a tightly structured image that points to the interconnectedness of the world, in which actions and policies often have far-reaching consequences.

5. Robbie Robison Memorial Award--Best of Ceramics--$350

Eliza Wolfe, Rose Hips, Ceramic

I found this satisfyingly quirky, right down to its punning title. It has a strong sculptural presence combining various ways of making ceramics into a hybrid that is united by the glazes while still letting the various components assert themselves.

6. Linda Bebko Jones Memorial Award--Best of Sculpture--$350

Nathan McCarty, Tarnished Self, Ceramic and Ink

Bold in many ways, from the strong psychological attitude of the facial expression to the dramatic sweep of hair. The artist made all the right decisions as to what to include and what to omit as unnecessary detail, such that every aspect of this piece feels directed toward a clear artistic goal.

7. Dr. Dennis Travis Memorial Award--Best of Photography--$350

Patty Raydo, Big Sur at Sunset, Photographic Art

For sheer beauty of nature, this would be hard to beat. The beautiful composition is both stable and lively as the coast recedes in space, the suffused golden glow of sunset adds a magical quality to all of the colors, and the breaking wave contributes to the feeling of a perfect moment.

8. Vivian Neubauer Memorial Award--Best of Wearable Art--$350

Cheryl Brugger, Gaia mask, Mixed

This was a stand out for sheer joie de vivre—a tropical explosion of fronds and intense color, but structured in the way that the shapes and colors build in layers from back to front.

9. James "Jim" Chizmadia Memorial Award--Most Creative Art Award--$50

Mary Pat Haven, Child’s Play, Three Dimensional Collage and Acrylic

I found this to be highly creative in the way that the toy blocks with letters are echoed in the larger forms which seem to be spinning off of the rectangle. The rich palette unifies the piece, and child’s play feels fun but with a serious undercurrent.

10. NPAA Director’s Award--$100 (Northwest Pennsylvania Artists Association)

Q. Henry, Torosomanipulation 1, Bronze

11. PIAA Director’s Award--$100 (Presque Isle Artists Association)

Diana Boone, Black Swan, Photography
